To grow your revenue, you must first grow your knowledge

Here's Why It's Important to Build Knowledge Capital

We’ve been doing this a long time. We’ve worked across many industries in our collective experience — each one of them different. But there's one thing every company has in common.

The one thing we keep hearing, over and over again, is “I want to grow my revenue.”

Hey, don’t we all? And sure, we could go into the technical details about Inbound Marketing: media buy, chatbots, SEO, content....

We could talk until we’re blue in the face about sales and marketing alignment, exponential growth, digital transformation, and other fancy buzzwords that make us sound cool. But at the end of the day, the thing that matters most in the success of a business is not one thing, but many things: most of which may seem small on their own. All of those things, however, can be summed up in one sentence:

You can never stop learning.

Why You Never Want to Stop Learning

The world changes. Business, too, changes — albeit at a slightly slower pace. The most important aspect of adaptability is your ability and willingness to learn. Not only that- you must also act on what you’ve learned. And you have to be willing to listen to the experts within your company. No one knows everything about everything: not even the CEO. We shouldn’t expect that of anyone, no matter how high up they are.

Now, if you’re a part of an IT company, be it VAR, MSP, SaaS, Software, or something else, you know this better than anybody. The rate of technological advancement doubles every two years. We’re willing to bet that even if you’re not in IT, you still have new industry techniques to learn about. So why stop at your industry? Learn more about business principles, corporate strategy, and the tactics of successful businesses.

Learning + Application = Revenue Growth

If you prioritize learning for yourself and your people — and apply that learning to your business — you will achieve revenue growth. There are plenty of low and no-cost educational resources out there. Try a simple Google search to find plenty of resources and education to help you learn.

Here are some tips to promote learning in your business:

  • Have a ‘knowledge centre’ or Wiki that your employees can contribute to. This database can contain anything from education about the business itself to an employee’s specialized field.
  • Have a communal library in the break room where employees can ‘check out’ books to read. Not sure what to stock? Ask your employees for suggestions.
  • Encourage your employees to attend seminars and/or webinars to fuel their knowledge.
  • Get subscriptions to business or industry-specific magazines for the office.
  • Organize monthly or quarterly Lunch and Learns
  • Offer a tuition reimbursement program
