Challenges of a Marketing Manager

A Day In the Life

Due to their notoriously heavy workload, and high expectations from superiors, Marketing Managers today are almost always under pressure. Not only do they need to focus on the day-to-day delivery – which is the traditional role of a Marketing Manager – but they also need to be preparing for trade shows, creating email templates, coordinating with agencies, and seeing to countless other minuscule tasks.Yet at the same time a Marketing Manager needs to be a leader in the company, deciding what it is that will make the company unique, and ultimately taking ownership of revenue. What we’re seeing now with any technology or startup company is that Marketing Managers play a very important role in taking the company to the next level.

The challenges with Marketing Managers today are as follows:

1. The Tools for Delivery – What kind of skills will the team need? To be successful, it is important to find a balance between the traditional ways of marketing and the new methodologies.

2. How to Rise Above the Noise – Any marketing manager for any company already has a website, SEO, etc. What makes them unique? This is where inbound marketing comes into play.
3. Strategy Before Tactics – Every company has blogs, but what are they blogging about? If there is no greater strategy than you are just doing it for the sake of it. This, of course, does not increase revenue.
4. Analytics and Metrics – How to analyze if your marketing is working or not. What metrics do you need to focus on? These days you should be measuring exactly what works and what doesn’t.

We will delve into these topics in an attempt to experience a real day in the life of a Marketing Manager at an IT, technology or startup company. In doing so, we will attempt to address and resolve some of the issues that they face in today’s ever-evolving world of data driven marketing.
